WEST 1.jpg

THE WEST COAST SCENE

In the 1960’s I was in a record shop and under the classical music section found an album of  “Silver Apples of the Moon” by Morton Subotnick.

On listening I was mesmerised. It the first totally electronic music I had heard. I knew nothing at the time how this was made and had never heard of a Buchla synthesizer.

Much later I read a book called “Analog Days” by Trevor Pinch.

It described the evolution of both the West Coast movement pioneered by Donald Buchla and the East Coast scene driven by Robert Moog.

Another innovator on the West Coast from the early 1970’s was Serge Tcherepnin.

In time I found schematics of the Buchla modules and decided to have a try at making something along those lines. The schematics of the 200 series are sometimes confusing and not easy to read.

Some of the designs presented here are based very loosely on Buchla and Serge. Many are my own.

Hopefully I didn’t infringe any copyrights or missed any acknowledgments.

Bob Moog & Don Buchla

Some component notes:

Because the schematics were drawn for the stripboard layouts there may be some front panel mounted pots and switches missing. Apologies if it is confusing.

There are also some designs using the difficult to find CA 3080 opamps.

These can usually be replaced with LM13700.

Also all dual transistors can be replaced using discrete transistors in thermal contact with the 1k Tempco.

The vactrols are DIY and there are online instructions on how to make them.

All diodes are 1N4148

All NPN transistors are BC 337 or similar

All PNP transistors are BC 327 or similar

JFET are MPF102

COMPLEX OSCILLATOR.png

COMPLEX WAVEFORM MODULE

This module is based conceptually on the Buchla 259 but the circuitry is totally different. The oscillators are based on transconductance amps wth additional waveshaping.

The timbre generator is based on part of Ken Stone’s waveshaper.

LOW FREQUENCY OSCILLATOR _ LOW PASS GATE.png

LOW FREQUENCY OSCILLATOR / LOW PASS GATE

This is a VCO with three frequency ranges and 6 different output waveforms. It has a 1Volt/Oct. response. There is also a Low pass gate based on a transconductance amp and two voltage processors

LOW PASS GATES _ ENVELOPES _ BANDPASS FILTER.png

LOW PASS GATES / ENVELOPES / BANDPASS FILTER

The envelope generators are simple 555 based designs with AD / AR / Repeat modes. The Lowpass gates are based on the original Buchla design. The Bandpass filter is a vactrol based design similar to the lowpass gate

OUTPUT MODULE.png

OUTPUT MODULE

This module is a simple 3 channel mixer. The reverb is a Accu-Bell BTDR-3H module. The digital scope is widely available online as a kit

OUTPUT MODULE

RING MODULATOR _ VCA.png

RING MODULATOR / VCA

This module is based on the Serge Ring Modulator There is also a Pic based Midi interface

SEQUENTIAL MIXER.png

SEQUENTIAL MIXER

This module is a 8 step sequencer driving 8 transmission gates. There is a voltage controlled trigger generator with various controls. The switches can switch between input and 5 Volt allowing it to be used as a voltage step generator

SEQUENTIAL M

Slope_Pulse.png

SLOPE GENERATOR / PULSE GENERATOR

The Slope part is based on the Serge Universal Slope Generator.
It uses the very hard to get LM3900 Norton Opamp.

SOURCE OF UNCERTAINTY MODULE.png

SOURCE OF UNCERTAINTY MODULE

This module is sort of loosely based on part of the Buchla design. The only part similar is the Stored Random voltage.

DUAL OSCILLATOR MODULE 258.png

DUAL OSCILLATOR MODULE 258

This module is based on the Buchla design with Mark Verbos modifications, plus a few more.

The oscillators have a 1V/Oct. response.
